Middle School Male Layout- Gifted and Talented Advocacy

Sometimes a school year can be defined by the actions of a single teacher and the impact can be felt for years to come. If you are lucky you will find that amazing teacher who turns on the light bulb of knowledge. Unfortunately though, there can also be that teacher who has has tunnel vision and can not see beyond. Unfortunately James found the tunnel visioned math teacher in 7th grade and it impacted him for years to come.

James is gifted. In a previous school system he had received services for the gifted in third grade. He flourished in the program. When we moved the gifted teacher (who previously taught in our new school system)  tried to advocate for him to be in the new school's gifted program. Despite hours of meetings and providing documentation the new school refused to allow him to be in the gifted program until after he had been in the school for a year. They also lied and said the previous school system said he wasn't ready for the gifted and talented program. This was a major issue, because in the original school's gifted program they had already covered the 4th grade curriculum and used the same books. So in essence as a gifted child he would be repeating his fourth grade year.

After bringing James to a meeting, so that the school would have to put a face to the name, the school compromised with letting him skip fourth grade. But I was forced to sign a waiver that I would I would waive my right to sue if he experienced psychological damage from this in later life! LOL

In 7th grade they refused to put James in an advance Math class because he was disorganized. Many gifted and talented kids are disorganized. I tried to advocate for him, but instead he was bored and the grades dropped because he misplaced the papers. In reality his disorganization occurred after a spinal cord surgery. Before that he was bordering on obsessive compulsive. So the school should have been providing the structure to help with the disorganization, but instead they spent the time complaining about his disorganization rather than teaching him how to overcome it.

Thankfully he found a teacher right out of college in high school. And she recognized his talent. He was on track for general math and he wouldn't have the classes he needed for Purdue. She advocated for him and got him into advance math classes-but it meant he had to take Algebra One and Algebra Two at the SAME TIME. He graduated with straight A's in math and with a 3.8 GPA. On his SAT he scored in the 98th percentile in Math. He is in his freshmen year at Purdue, but he has enough credits to be a second semester Sophomore. Yet a 7th grade teacher felt his needs were better met in a general math class!

Having a child with special needs and the other child gifted and talented, plus having taught special education for almost 19 years, it is sad to say advocating for the  gifted child has been the tougher battle through the years. There are protected programs in place for special education. Lots of services are available. But gifted programs are the first to go when there are funding issues. Qualifying for gifted services is a local decision with no State-wide benchmarks. Our state is constantly focusing on "brain drain" (Bright kids leaving the state after graduating). I honestly believe if they would focus more on making sure these kids are encouraged in school and given the opportunity to grow instead of stagnating, our kids might be more enthusiastic about staying in the state. But they are smart enough to know their kids are going to have a challenge in getting an education that is challenging.

So my layout today is representative of that year. The quotes I chose for it represent James'  bright future, thanks to that beginning high school math teacher. He recently changed his career goals and is majoring in languages, business management and political science because he wants to work in an Embassy. He recently got a summer internship in a Consulate.  He is reaching out for his dreams and winning.

I choose the Crafter's Companion Strawberry Kisses My Boy Shoe Stamp because it reminded me of his 7th grade year. He had the gifted and talented running shoes to be off and running, but due to the poor insight of his math teacher it ended up being a sleeper year. (There's a puppy sleeping in the sneaker.)

Lasting Memories Challenge # 76 Wrapped Up In Ribbon

Well the challenge for me this week was a bit more challenging than normal. May Arts sent each member of the Design Team a piece of ribbon to include in Lasting Memories Wrapped Up In Ribbon challenge layouts. Mine was hot pink ric rack. I have boys! LOL So I thought and thought. And then I called Mom and asked her to come to the rescue! She found my baby pics-which were perfect since this year one of my goals and to get my story told through scrapbooking.

So now my true age is about to be divulge. It's hard to hide the fact I was born in the early 60's when you look at this baby seat! LOL And check out the colors of my grandmother's living room! LOL And yes I am half a century young:)

Supplies: Everything on this layout is The Girls Paperie, except for the Mayarts Ric Rack. I found the paper collection  through a real cool discount website Scrapbook Steals. They have two daily deals morning and evening. I often can get a complete paper and embellishment collection for 50-75% off! And shipping is very reasonable.

Since this is ribbon week we decided as a Design Team to share how we store ribbon. So now you will know one of my secret addictions right up there with paper- RIBBON. It like a magnet to me. My idea of a good time is to spend an hour sifting through the ribbon at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby. And the dollar bin has my name written all over it. Sometimes when I am having a bad day I just like to play with my ribbon as therapy!  So yes I really do have 7 Simply Renee Clip It Up Ribbon Organizers. And I have told myself I can't buy anymore ribbon until I use what I have. So that hot pink rick rack from May Arts was soothing to my soul!!!!

I also use  a Pull EZ Ribbon Purse. This is great for those smaller pieces. And get this-I have never had a single tangle!!!

The prize this week at Lasting Memories is sponsored by May Arts. Look at all of that yummy ribbon! Get those layouts submitted so that you don't miss out !
Here's a little about May Arts ..

Lasting Memories Challenge #75 -All You Need is Love Feb 12

If you are looking for the Cards for Emily Hop Hop please click here.

The challenge this week at  Lasting Memories is “All You Need Is Love…”- Use the word LOVE on your layout but does NOT have to be Valentine theme (certainly can be if you like though!)

Our awesome blog candy this week is from Michele. Please stop by her blog and wish her a HAPPY Birthday!!!

With the challenge this week I also decided to use Lasting Memories Sketch of the Week.
Thanks to Pagemaps !

This weeks layout is of the boys' cousin and her new hubby.  What says "LOVE" more than a wedding?

Not sure what tricks the camera wants to play today, but that top row of pearls and ribbon is straight on the layout. If anyone has a suggestion of what settings on my camera I need to change, I would love to hear them. And the flash was off, so I am not sure why the metallic gold paper matting behind the photo picked up my image slightly- I don't see it when I look at. Must be camera gremlins...sigh

Supplies:

Paper and Cardstock: Scraps,Scrappin Sports & More Nephew/Niece, Laura Ashley Purple Vines, K & Company Blue Roses, Purple Gingham, K and Company Lilacs, Walmart Gold Metallic Paper

Embellishments: Joanne's Purple Bridal Bouquet, Zva Creative Pearl Swirls, Hobby Lobby Wedding Ribbon

Cricut Cartridges: George and Basic Shapes (hearts) and Cursive 101 (love-welded in Cricut Cart Room)

Tip: Sewing on paper can be tricky. I found when trying to sew through the 2 layered hearts the paper was having a hard time moving through the sewing machine. I ended up first gluing the hearts in place with my Glue Glider Pro and then having to help guide the paper. If you use an adhesive be sure to wipe down the needle, foot, and anything else that may have gotten glue on it with a baby wipe and some Un-Du. Otherwise it will gum up your machine and you will have much bigger problems.

Tip on making the dimensional hearts: I glued the bottom one down with repositionable glue. I did the same with the one on top. I then sewed the line through the center. I took the sides of the top heart and removed the respositionable tape. I then folded the sides of the top heart up.

Challenges:
Lasting Memories Challenge #75 - Use the word Love and I also used the sketch for this week

Be sure and stop by to wish Michele Happy Birthday! Have fun creating your "Love" Layouts! I can't wait to see them:)
