Rugby Layout

James had  an awesome experience when he was in high school. One of his friend's dad played Rugby in South Africa and decided to introduce the sport to our community. When James asked to play I had no clue what Rugby was. I thought it was related to soccer. So when I went to his first game I quickly found  it was more like American football without the protective equipment. I could have died a thousand deaths! And I was absolutely clueless as to how the rules worked and I had to watch the other parents to know when I was supposed to cheer! And by the time I figured out how dangerous the game was it turned out James was so good he was playing on the JV and Varsity teams at the same time. So how was I supposed to say no?

And on top of it all the coach was one of those coaches that every parent dreams to have for their kids. The coach was not interested in winning, he was interested in the kids learning the fundamentals. (And by the way both years the team was within the top 5 in the state despite being a new team, so it goes to show a coach who understands fundamentals can be successful) And he was interested in working as a team and had no tolerance for kids who wanted to be "glory hogs." So how could I say no at this point when I had a postive male role model for James?

Thankfully during his two years of play he never had more than a cut knee. And compared to baseball where the coach was telling him to let the pitcher hit him with the baseball causing 2 concussions, Rugby was very safe. And his coach was Mr. McDreamy with a wonderful Australian type accent that I could have listened to all day! LOL Sigh..he's married........

Journal: When you wanted to play Rugby it was a shock to say the least. We knew nothing about about the sport. And honestly if I had known there was no protective equipment, I would have said NO! But I am glad you enjoyed learning a sport that is loved throughout the world.

  2. Hello Elizabeth. I read your post and was glad to know that I'm not the only mom going rugby?? Our county formed a team in Febuary and WOW. My son is now on scholarship at Idaho State thanks to the great coaches at the youth level. It's a great sport. ER dr. said he sees less injuiries in rugby becasue there is no protective gear. God luck to your sons on the pitch.
